How to choose the right hair colour for you

There is a moment that happens after really good hair colour where people cannot quite work out what has changed.

You suddenly look fresher. Healthier. More awake somehow. Skin looks clearer, eyes brighter, hair shinier. Everything feels softer, more expensive, more balanced. People often think it is makeup, skincare or even lighting.

Usually, it is simply the right hair colour.

The problem is that hair colour advice online has become strangely over simplified. Everybody is apparently being diagnosed as a “winter” or told they need copper hair immediately because somebody on TikTok decided warm tones were having a moment.

But hair colour is far more subtle than that.

At Edward James Salons, choosing the right colour is never about forcing somebody into a trend. It is about looking at the person as a whole. Skin tone matters, of course, but so does eye colour, contrast, hair texture, condition and the overall feeling somebody wants from their hair.

Some people suit softness around the face. Others come alive with depth and richness. Some need cooler tones to sharpen and brighten the complexion, whilst others suddenly look healthier the moment warmth is introduced back into the hair.

And then there is the reality nobody online seems particularly interested in talking about properly, which is whether the hair can actually tolerate the process needed to get there.

Because there is very little point chasing the perfect blonde if the hair no longer looks healthy afterwards.

This is often where great colourists differ from trend driven colour. A good consultation is not simply about deciding what would theoretically suit somebody. It is about understanding what is achievable whilst still keeping the hair looking glossy, believable and luxurious.

Quite often, the best results happen gradually. A softer shift in tone can completely change somebody’s complexion. A little more brightness around the face can make the eyes look clearer. Sometimes adding dimension creates far more impact than pushing for a dramatic transformation in one sitting.

Healthy hair almost always looks more expensive than over processed hair, regardless of the colour itself. At Edward James Salons, consultations are designed to feel considered and personal rather than formulaic. We look at how somebody wears their hair, how much maintenance they realistically want, how their hair behaves naturally and how colour can work with their features rather than overpower them. Because the best hair colour rarely looks obvious. It just looks right.
