Hair extensions have changed. Most people just haven’t realised yet.
There is still a strange misconception that hair extensions are either obvious, uncomfortable or only designed for people wanting dramatically long hair.
In reality, modern hair extensions have become incredibly refined.
When they are done properly, most people should not be able to tell somebody is wearing extensions at all. The hair simply looks fuller, healthier, thicker or somehow more polished. Often the best extensions are the ones nobody notices.
At Edward James Salons, the biggest thing we explain during consultations is that there is no single “best” extension method. Different hair types need completely different systems and choosing the wrong one is usually why people end up having a bad experience.
Some clients need invisible fullness around the front hairline where the hair has become finer over time. Others want soft volume through the sides without adding too much length. Some want full transformation hair with movement and density throughout. Others simply want their hair to feel better when it is styled.
The method matters enormously. Tape extensions have evolved massively over the last few years and are one of the most popular options for creating natural fullness and length quickly. At Edward James Salons we use both Celebrity Choice Slimline Tapes and Invisi Tapes, which are designed to sit flatter and blend more discreetly at the root area than older extension systems. They are comfortable, lightweight and ideal for clients wanting luxurious looking hair with relatively fast maintenance appointments.
Express wefts have also become increasingly popular because they create beautiful fullness very quickly whilst still feeling soft and natural. They are particularly good for clients wanting thicker, more glamorous hair without spending hours in the salon chair.
Then there are the more delicate extension methods such as stick tip micro ring extensions and nano extensions, which are often used for finer hair types or areas where the extensions need to disappear completely into the natural hair. Nano extensions in particular are brilliant around the top and front hairline because they are so incredibly discreet.
What most people do not realise is that extension consultations are not really about choosing the extension itself. They are about understanding the hair. Density matters. Hair texture matters. Lifestyle matters. Even the way somebody wears their hair day to day changes which extension method will work best. There is also a huge difference between adding hair beautifully and simply adding more hair.
At Edward James Salons, we are always looking at balance, movement and believability. Extensions should move naturally with the hair. They should feel comfortable. They should blend seamlessly. Most importantly, they should work with the condition and integrity of the natural hair rather than fight against it.
